From Once Upon an Island: The History of Chincoteague
by Kirk Mariner (Miona Publications, 1996)

ust off the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula, in the extreme northeastern corner of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, lies the largest inhabited island in the state, Chincoteague Island . . . .
"Isn't that where the ponies are?"
Yes. But Chincoteague is much more than ponies. Chincoteague has been continuously settled for more than three centuries, and for at least a third of that time has enjoyed a considerable renown as a vacation spot and for its seafood. Its year-round population is approximately 4,500, but there are seasons when the island contains as many as 50,000 visitors. It is rich in heritage and tradition, has places of great natural beauty, and is surrounded by waters which have provided livelihood to its residents and recreation to its visitors. It is today a fascinating blend of the up-to-date and the traditional, the quaint and the garish, the picturesque and the prosaic, and its story is one of people as well as ponies, landlubbers as well as seafarers, farmers as well as fishermen . . . .

Once You slept on an Island
If once you have slept on an island
you'll never be quite the same
you may look as you looked the day before
and go by the same old name
you may bustle about in street and shop
you may sit at home and sew
but you'll see blue water and wheeling gulls
wherever your feet may go
you may chat with the neighbors of this and that
and close to your fire keep
but you'll hear ship whistle and lighthouse bell
and tides beat through your sleep
oh you won't know why, and you can't say how
such a change upon you came
but - once you have slept on an island
you'll never be quite the same!
